Bordeaux En Primeur 2025 — A Vintage of Fire and Freshness

Bordeaux En Primeur 2025 — A Vintage of Fire and Freshness

A previous article noted that “the 2025 vintage in Bordeaux is shaping up to be remarkable for its concentration, balance and expression of terroir, despite challenges linked to heat, drought and low yields.” (https://ftt-link.fr/MDCave-BdxTechnic2025)

Early feedback from producers, critics and official bodies already suggested that the best wines combine the power and structure of 2022 with the freshness and balance of great classical vintages such as 2010 and 2009. Disease pressure was minimal, and advances in precision viticulture and sustainable practices enabled estates to manage the climatic extremes.

After tasting more than 500 wines, the Maître de Cave team fully confirms these expectations. The overall level is high, with many excellent wines and several true standouts. Ripeness, freshness and refined extraction reflect the responsiveness of the teams: early harvesting, gentle extraction, and cooler fermentation choices. More than 400 wines were included in our tasting notes. Our Overview presents the number of wines that reached one of the three quality levels we attribute: Exceptional (96–100) and Outstanding (90–95)

This first article focuses on the wines rated Exceptional. A second article will present the Outstanding wines. The number of exceptional wines is also greater. The 2025 vintage offers radiant, sun‑kissed wines that are often more immediately appealing than the 2024s. At their best, they combine ripeness, power, elegance and freshness, a rare balance in such a demanding climatic context.

2025: A Vintage of Heat… and a Few Timely Rains

Many château representatives acknowledged the importance of the August rains, which provided much‑needed relief during a scorching summer. This blessing, however, did not reach all appellations equally.
The Maître de Cave team is confident that each estate adapted skilfully to its conditions, drawing the best from its vines and terroirs through careful management of ripeness and measured technical decisions.

Château Haut-Brion Blanc, Pessac-Léognan – Grand Cru Classé de Graves     98/100  Sauvignon Blanc 53% Sémillon 47%

Brilliant in the glass with green highlights. On the nose, the Sauvignon Blanc bursts with vibrant exotic fruit and a smooth, perfectly polished minerality. The attack is fresh and juicy, marked by ripe pear. The mid‑palate is lively and precise, carrying the wine toward a vibrant saline finish. Its intensity and complexity reflect the concentrated flavors of a hot, dry, sun‑drenched vintage. Without a doubt, it was the finest white we tasted.

  2025 Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, Pessac-Léognan     98/100   Sauvignon Blanc 35.5% Sémillon 64.5%

Crystalline in the glass, with green hues and silver flashes hinting at the brilliance to come. The Sémillon‑driven profile brings a rich, rounded intensity, giving the palate a deeper, more contemplative weight. Comice pear and melon shine on both nose and palate, delivering generosity, length, and a vibrant sense of balance. This wine will age beautifully, gaining even more nuance in the cellar. Another exceptional creation from La Mission Haut-Brion.

 97 Points/100

2025 Château Les Charmes Godard Blanc, Francs-Côtes-de-Bordeaux   97/100 Sauvignon Blanc 25% Sémillon 60% Sauvignon Gris 15%

From limestone‑rich soils in the little‑known appellation Francs–Côtes‑de‑Bordeaux, this wine is precisely the kind of bottle that will help put the region on the map. Fermented in 10% new 500‑liter demi‑muids and aged six months on stirred lees, it shows both clarity and depth. Brilliant and crystalline in the glass, the robe is pale straw with subtle green reflections. The nose opens with whispers of dried herbs, white flowers, and a fine saline minerality, all touched by quiet exotic fruit nuances. The palate is elegant and silky, carrying dried herbs and white‑and‑yellow fruit with a gentle lees‑driven creaminess. The finish is long, saline, and beautifully shaped, leaving an impression of purity and character. A memorable white wine – distinctive, textural, quietly unforgettable, and a true price performer.

2025 Château Margaux, Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux, Bordeaux     97/100   Sauvignon Blanc 100%

Château Margaux faced the same intense heat, sun, and drought conditions as the rest of Bordeaux in 2025. The late‑August rains offered only basic relief and helped the fruit reach a more even and complete maturity. The estate waited patiently for full ripeness, especially phenolic maturity, before harvesting. They picked Sauvignon Blanc for Pavillon Blanc between 18 and 22 August, of which only 45% of harvest was selected for the final blend, for a final yield of only 16 hl/ha. The final product is brilliant in the glass, pale straw with the faintest green hues. The nose is deep and refined, combining spring flowers, white peach, vanilla wafer, and toasted almond with the subtle herbaceous lift of Sauvignon Blanc. The palate is crisp and fresh yet amply textured, layered with Comice pear, peach, and exotic citrus. A long, saline finish binds the wine with clarity and precision. We have tasted beautifully aged Pavillon Blanc in the past, and this 2025 has all the structure, purity, and intensity to join them — a white built for decades.

2025 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, Pessac-Léognan  97/100  Sauvignon Blanc 90% Sémillon 5% Sauvignon Gris 5%

Water management guided every major decision in the vineyard in 2025. It became clear early in 2025 that maintaining vine health and protecting the fruit would be essential to producing top quality wine. At harvest, each parcel was vinified and aged separately to preserve the individuality of its terroir before any blending. In the glass, the wine is brilliant and crystalline, pale gold with silver reflections. The nose is vibrant and complex, opening with white and green flowers, pink grapefruit, yuzu, apricot, and passion fruit. Oak remains discreet, contributing only the faintest notes of crème brûlée and anise. The palate is fresh and ample, beautifully balanced, and layered with apricot, lime zest, and a subtle sweetness from the 50% new oak. Vivid acidity carries the wine through a long, pure, and richly textured finish. Already delicious, this is a white of superb aging potential — precise, expressive, and built to evolve gracefully.

 96 Points/100

2025 Château Saint Robert Blanc, Graves     96/100  Sauvignon Blanc 87% Sémillon 13%

The first official reference to Château Saint‑Robert dates to the late 17th century, though winegrowing in this part of Graves reaches back to ancient times. Crystalline brilliance highlights the pale yellow robe, touched with subtle green tones and silver reflections. The nose blossoms with the graceful scent of honeysuckle and pollen, wildflower honey, and young pineapple, lifted by whispers of white pepper and a hint of vanilla cream. On the palate, the wine is already ready to drink, offering a silky texture and a fresh, gently rich oakiness. Round and harmonious, it unfolds with quiet complexity and a chic, mouthwatering character that borders on the gastronomic. The persistence is impressive, carrying fresh fruit and subtle spice long after the sip. This is a vibrant, polished white with enough body and character to cellar confidently for three to five years.

2025 Château Suduiraut, Blanc “Vieilles Vignes”, Bordeaux     96/100  Sauvignon Blanc 34% Sémillon 66%

The wine is produced from a precise selection of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc parcels, sourced from vines averaging 45 years of age. At this stage of maturity, the vines offer the purest expression of their varietal character and the clearest definition of their terroir. In the glass, the wine is crystalline, pale straw with subtle green reflections. The nose is intense and aromatic, evoking fresh grape juice with the zest of lemon and lime, all lifted by a crisp, mouthwatering acidity. The palate is long and vinous, carrying a layered complexity that unfolds gradually. Fresh fruit notes persist through the finish, which is bright, clean, and remarkably sustained. A vibrant, terroir‑driven white with purity, length, and a refreshing sense of precision.

 2025 Cos d’Estournel Blanc, Bordeaux      96/100   Sauvignon Blanc 56% Sémillon 44%

This was the earliest harvest for Cos d’Estournel Blanc since its creation in 2005. In 2025, Sémillon makes up 44% of the blend, bringing depth and texture, while the parcels rooted in limestone terroirs contribute remarkable freshness and tension. In the glass, the wine is brilliant and crystalline, its silver‑tinged robe shimmering under the light. The nose is complex and expressive, layering yellow fruit, honey, and fresh wax with bright lemon, dried thyme, and the faintest touch of vanilla from the subtle oak. The palate is long and elegant, almost chic in its composure. Beneath the roundness of the Sémillon, minerality drives the wine, supported by vivid freshness and a refined tension that energizes each sip. Apricot, citrus zest, and delicate sweet‑spice notes unfold with clarity, while the modest 6% new oak provides precisely the nuance the wine requires. A sophisticated and finely detailed Cos Blanc — vibrant, mineral, and quietly thrilling — with the structure and precision to age beautifully.

2025 Château Sigalas Rabaud, Bommes, Sauternes – Premier Cru Classé     97/100   Sémillon 100%

In the glass, the wine is brilliant, its pale‑gold robe deepens noticeably toward the center with touches of visible viscosity. The nose is striking with candied lemon rind, apricot jam, and warm baking spices that combine freshness with depth. On the palate, subtle botrytis adds a subtle smokiness and a viscous texture. At present the fruit profile leans toward late‑harvest character, yet, the candied fruit, fig, and richer, jammy character are already showing through. Still very young, the wine displays exceptional balance and definition, its sweetness carried by a vibrant underlying structure. It is a Sauternes showing clear promise, poised for a long and luminous evolution.

 96 Points/100

2025 Château Doisy-Daëne, Barsac, Barsac – Deuxième Cru Classé     96/100  Sauvignon Blanc 12% Sémillon 88%

A beautiful, intensely violet robe. The nose is already complex, with red and black wild berries, herbal tones, and spice. The attack on the palate is straightforward and direct, bringing subtle woody notes. These evolve into harmonious accents of cocoa and toast. The fruit is ripe, with hints of licorice emerging over finely grained tannins. The finish is long and well‑balanced. The use of a cold room for the ripe grapes has certainly contributed to a wine that marries maturity and freshness with superb finesse. A signature 2025 !2025 Château Palmer, Margaux – Grand Cru Classé – Troisième Cru  99/100  Cabernet Sauvignon 41% Merlot 55% Petit Verdot 4%

An particularly dark robe. The nose is highly aromatic, floral, and lifted by fruity notes. The palate unfolds slowly, revealing chalky nuances that define its terroir. Elegant intensity and length combine in true harmony and balance. Fresh and structured this wine defines Margaux in 2025.

2025 Château Pontet-Canet, Pauillac – Grand Cru Classé – Cinquième Cru 99/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 56% Merlot 39% Cabernet Franc 4% Petit Verdot 1%

An early harvest completed on 23 September delivered ripe, luminous fruit and remarkably supple tannins. The wine shows a deep purple hue, shaped by an extended 4–6 week post‑fermentation maceration with the cap fully immersed, and by the gentle precision of pump‑overs alone during fermentation. Élevage combines 50% new oak, 15% one‑year barrels, and 35% concrete amphorae, bringing both structure and a finely polished texture. The result is a poised, elegant Pontet‑Canet, carried by a vibrant, refreshing juiciness that lifts the entire finish.

98 POINTS / 100

2025 Château Ausone, Saint-Émilion     98/100  Cabernet Sauvignon 5% Merlot 30% Cabernet Franc 65%

Brilliance reveals an intense purple that deepens to a black‑ink core. Sweet baking spices and dried herbs add nuance to the luscious blackberry richness and fresh cassis. Well‑cured, sweet oak amplifies the palate’s generosity, while silken tannins glide into a clean, composed finish. The wine delivers intensity without excess, and excellence without pretension. Château Ausone delivers another exceptional wine in 2025.

2025 Château La Conseillante, Pomerol     98/100   Cabernet Sauvignon 3% Merlot 87% Cabernet Franc 10%

According to La Conseillante’s co-owner, Dr. Bertrand Nicolas, the estate’s battle against 2025’s intense sunshine, heat, and worsening drought required genuinely creative solutions. In the vineyard, they turned to kaolinite — Chinese porcelain clay — to reflect light and protect the ripening fruit from sunburn, while in the cellar they adapted their usual fermentation approach to avoid reduction and over‑concentration. Preserving freshness and finesse was essential, and it shows in the wine. The results are exceptional: a brilliant, intense violet that deepens to a purple core, with Cabernet Sauvignon delivering power on both nose and palate, and perfectly ripe Cabernet Franc adding a striking green‑peppercorn complexity beneath the olallieberry richness. Silky tannins shape a voluptuous mouthfeel, leading to an elegant, well‑balanced, fruit‑filled finish. The tasting was illuminating; the wine itself left me speechless.

2025 Château Margaux, Margaux – Grand Cru Classé – Premier Grand Cru Classé     98/100  Cabernet Sauvignon 89% Merlot 6% Cabernet Franc 4% Petit Verdot 1%

The quality of the 2025 fruit from their finest parcels was so extraordinary that the team chose to exclude additional high‑quality lots rather than dilute the magic they saw emerging in the Grand Vin assemblage. In the name of purity and precision, those parcels were left out. As a result, the Grand Vin production was just over half of a normal year — a sacrifice that shows unmistakably in the wine’s excellence. It is radiant in the glass, an intense purple that darkens to black at the core. Aromas of rose petals and violets concentrate into blackberry richness, wrapped in well‑groomed sweet oak and lifted by aromatic spices. The palate is intense, layered with luscious fruit supported by firm, sweet oak and a supple, finely shaped tannin structure. This is a wine built for the ages.

2025 Château Pavie, Saint-Émilion – Premier Grand Cru Classé A     98/100  Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Merlot 30% Cabernet Franc 60%

In 2025, Cabernet Franc attained exceptional quality at Château Pavie. It leads to the blend for the first time at 60%, bringing a fresher, more harmonious balance to the estate’s trademark power. The 2025 Pavie shows brilliant with an intense purple, violet tones, and cherry reflections. It opens with concentrated black fruit and a vivid cassis attack. Dried herbs and sweet oak offer complexity and aromatic spice. The palate is rich yet supple, with soft, polished tannins and a jammy, dark‑fruited core lifted by the Cabernet Franc’s freshness. Aged entirely in new oak, the wine gains depth, precision, and formidable aging potential. It is the Cabernet Franc that directs the wine and delivers its exceptional quality.

2025 Château Pavie-Macquin, Saint-Émilion – Premier Grand Cru Classé     98/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 2% Merlot 78% Cabernet Franc 20%

Perched at the top of a narrow switchback road, Château Pavie‑Macquin sits on the northern edge of the same limestone plateau that underpins Pavie to the south. The soils may be similar, but the style is distinctly their own, shaped by an independent approach in both vineyard and cellar. Brilliant in the glass, the wine shows an intense purple with ruby edges and a deep black core. The slightly closed nose reveals well‑cured exotic oak, milled green peppercorn, and ground clove threads that weave a delicate fabric of wax, honeysuckle, peony, and iris, and red cherry laced with blackberry. The palate is striking : supple, softly textured tannins, mouth‑filling black fruit, and a voluptuous yet poised profile. The balance is already impressive, and the long finish promises even greater refinement with time.

2025 Château de Chambrun, Lalande de Pomerol     96/100Merlot 84% Cabernet Franc 16%

Château Chambrun now farms organically with a strong commitment to biodiversity. The estate’s 12.4 hectares on the Néac Plateau are planted mainly to Merlot on soils of mixed gravel and clay over a compacted layer of the same composition. Beneath these topsoils lies an iron‑oxide‑rich smectite clay, abundant in Néac, that absorbs rainwater in spring and releases it gradually throughout the summer. This distinctive subsoil, responsible for the texture, structure, and aromatic identity of many Pomerols and Lalande‑de‑Pomerols, proved ideal in 2025 and played a key role in shaping Chambrun’s character and quality. The wine opens with a brilliant, intensely colored purple robe that deepens to a black core. The nose is complex and expressive, offering fresh red cherry, blackberry, and cassis, lifted by aromatic spiciness and sweet, well‑cured oak. The palate is intense yet elegant, centered on vibrant red‑cherry fruit with nuances of darker berries. Ducru‑Beaucaillou cultivates 75 hectares of vines rooted in deep, well‑drained gravel soils, the beautiful beaux cailloux that give the château its name. The vineyard is planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, both perfectly suited to these heat‑retentive, fast‑draining gravels. Its proximity to the Gironde estuary creates a unique microclimate that draws in fresh, humid air during the heat of summer while offering natural protection from frost, winter freeze, and even hail. Ducru-Beaucaillou’s location on the Saint‑Julien Crest of the Médoc Peninsula is, quite simply, an ideal location for growing exceptional grapes. 2025 Château Haut-Bages Libéral, Pauillac – Grand Cru Classé – Cinquième Cru 96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 83% Merlot 15% Cabernet Franc 1% Petit Verdot 1%

Gonzague and Claire Lurton have moved beyond the replacement logic of sustainability toward the more holistic vision of regenerative agriculture – an approach that restores soil health, enhances biodiversity, and strengthens the vineyard ecosystem as a whole. Permanent cover crops and reduced or no tilling have increased soil carbon, improved water retention, moderated soil temperatures, and reinforced drought resilience. In a year as demanding as 2025, these living soils and healthy vines were essential to the high‑quality fruit the estate harvested and the exceptional wines they produced. The wine shows a beautiful, brilliant aspect, with an intense purple robe and crystalline cherry reflections. The nose opens on fresh, intensely ripe blackberry and black‑cherry fruit, offering both pleasure and complexity. The palate is attractively supple, poised, and understated, carrying rich blackberry and cassis wrapped in delicate, spiced oak. The finish is long and refreshing, the soft tannins already well integrated. A Pauillac full of fruit and finesse.

2025 Château Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan – Grand Cru Classé de Graves – Premier Grand Cru Classé   96/100  Cabernet Sauvignon 26.2% Merlot 62% Cabernet Franc 11.8%

The 2025 is the highest expression of Château Haut‑Brion’s singular terroir. It demonstrates how patience in a drought year can yield rare, tiny berries of remarkable concentration, producing juice of exceptional depth and purity. Despite the controversies and challenges of the vintage, this may stand among the estate’s finest achievements. An astounding brilliance radiates from the glass, bright cherry reflections shimmering through an intense purple robe with a black core. The nose is rich and evocative, layering black fruit with green‑plant nuances and elderberry notes. On the palate, the wine reveals both substance and structure: beautiful density, gentle extraction, and a poised interplay of aromatic fresh herbs seasoning the poignant black fruit. A slight cocoa‑tinged bitterness adds further dimension. Though still somewhat reserved, the wine already shows its innate elegance and true balance, the succulent fruit perfectly measured against textured tannins and fresh acidity. The high‑toast, well‑matured oak contributes additional structure without overshadowing the fruit. This exceptional 2025 already displays formidable potential for ageing and refinement.

2025 Château La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan – Grand Cru Classé de Graves     96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 38.3% Merlot 58.3% Cabernet Franc 3.4%

The burning heat of the summer placed considerable pressure on the vines, reducing yields, yet the remaining grapes, shaped by the exceptional quality of the terroir, achieved a level of distinction and potential that is unmistakable. The result is a wine of remarkable character and depth. The robe displays a brilliant red with purple hues. The nose is intense and expressive, offering notes of bramble, black fruits, cedar, smoke, and fine spices. The attack is strikingly pure and structured, echoing the spices of the nose and revealing a concentrated core of small black fruits, including cassis. A whisper of reduction enhances the smoky, empyreumatic nuances of coffee and chocolate. This is an intense wine, almost tactile, with real presence on the palate. It is beautifully balanced, carried by a delightful freshness and a long, fruit‑driven finish. At this stage, the influence of the aging is perceptible, yet it integrates harmoniously into a wine of very strong potential. La Mission signs here an exceptional 2025, profound, expressive, and destined for long evolution.

2025 Château La Mondotte, Saint-Émilion – Premier Grand Cru Classé     96/100 Merlot 70%  Cabernet Franc 30%

The 4.5 hectares of Premier Grand Cru Classé vines, planted in 1915, draw their strength from a shallow layer of silty clay over fractured limestone—a geological inheritance that ensures rapid drainage during wet springs and preserves precious moisture through the driest summers. This venerable ancestry, combined with an exposure that captures exceptional sunlight, forms a superlative terroir, fully capable of producing a grand vin of stature and finesse. In 2025, a vintage marked by challenges, the estate’s resilience and precision shine through with admirable clarity. The wine presents a brilliant aspect, its intense purple robe deepening toward a black core. The nose is strikingly expressive, opening on reduced blackberry, fresh purple plum, and aromatic exotic spices, all framed by high‑toast oak that releases delicate wisps of fresh green herbs. On the palate, the wine is intense, layered, and multidimensional. Notes of Itxassou black cherry and cassis unfold with freshness and precision, supported by spicy oak and textured, supple tannins that glide effortlessly across the palate. This 2025 stands as a testament to the Domain’s tenacity—a wine of depth, elegance, and confident intensity, shaped by a historic terroir and a steadfast commitment to excellence.

2025 Château Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac – Grand Cru Classé – Premier Grand Cru Classé     96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 94% Merlot 5% Petit Verdot 1%

One of the four Premiers Grands Crus Classés of 1855, Château Lafite Rothschild is rooted deep in the long gravel ridge that runs along the Gironde from Margaux to Saint‑Estèphe. This geological spine, home to the four Premiers and most of the Deuxièmes and Troisièmes Crus, underscores how decisively soil shapes quality. Lafite’s vineyards fall into three zones—the slopes around the château, the Carruades plateau to the west, and a parcel in Saint‑Estèphe. In each, the vines thrive on fine, deep gravel over limestone, a structure that ensures ideal drainage and a reliable water reserve during drought. The wine is dressed in a very intense black‑purple with a pure black core. The nose is highly perfumed and lightly powdery, offering fresh roses, raspberry, red cherry, and blackberry, lifted by measured aromatic spices and deeply toasted woody notes. A persistent, teasing minerality whispers in the background. The palate is supple, marked by a gentle sucrosity, and delivers a vivid interplay of tart red and bold black fruit, accented by freshly milled Four‑Color Peppercorns. Sturdy oak and well‑textured tannins reinforce the perfect balance of fruit and acidity. As the wine unfolds, it reveals its power and well‑bred complexity, stretching across an exceptional length. This is a wine that rolls out its purple carpet—a grand, confident expression of Lafite’s incomparable terroir.

2025 Château Langoa Barton, Saint-Julien – Grand Cru Classé – Troisième Cru     96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 40% Merlot 45% Cabernet Franc 15%

Château Langoa Barton’s use of 15% Cabernet Franc in the 2025 assemblage has a striking influence on the wine. Its presence is immediately evident on both the nose and palate, bringing freshness, floral lift, red‑fruit brightness, spice, and elegant tannins. In 2025, the Cabernet Franc was clearly exceptional, meriting a greater share than usual. It imparts energy, aromatic complexity, and finesse, making the 2025 an exceptional wine. The wine shows a brilliant, medium‑plus intensity purple with cherry reflections. The nose is intense and finely detailed, opening with initial floral notes followed by rich, fresh blackberry and black cherry, powdered dried aromatic herbs, tobacco, a pinch of baking spice, and a touch of vanilla. This olfactory ensemble is supported by long, pleasantly toasted oak and a subtle wet‑stone minerality. The palate is intense and vibrant, filled with freshness, black fruit, and a garni of herbs and spices. Complexity is multifaceted: the rich oak provides structure, while the refined acidity maintains lift and brightness without sacrificing density. The tannins are contoured and finely woven, present across the entire palate with quiet authority. The finish is extremely long, marked by a beautiful balance that promises a long and confident evolution.

2025 Château Laroze, Saint-Émilion Grand – Cru Classé     96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 13% Merlot 47% Cabernet Franc 37% Petit Verdot 2% Malbec 1%

Crafting an exceptional wine begins with meticulous repeated sorting, but greatness ultimately comes from the art of assembling qualities and nuances in a way that preserves the estate’s identity while revealing the nuance and character of each harvest. In 2025, Château Laroze accentuates the transcendent Cabernet Franc with its vibrant freshness, green‑peppercorn complexity, and pure red‑fruit clarity to dominate the wine. It shows brilliantly in the glass, an intense purple with raspberry‑tinged highlights. The nose is expressive and finely layered: vivid redcurrant and fresh, unpicked raspberries lead, while subtle black‑fruit tones, dried herbs, and crushed green peppercorns add aromatic depth. The sweet, well‑seasoned oak completes the ensemble with gentle roundness. The palate carries the same fresh, fruit‑driven energy, supported by impressive depth. A harmonious blend of red and black fruits, lifted by baking spice, moves across the mouth on a wave of restrained, finely shaped tannins and congenial oak. The wine is fleshy and seductive with an unmistakable elegance.

2025 Château Larruau, Margaux     96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 52% Merlot 45% Cabernet Franc 2% Petit Verdot 1%

Château Larruau, originally named Château Dubignon and later Dubignon‑Talbot, was officially ranked a Third Growth (Troisième Cru) in the 1855 Classification, and at the time considered the smallest of all the crus. Thereafter, its history became noncontinuous. In the 1860s Phylloxera halted production; in the 1870s, Château Malescot Saint‑Exupéry absorbed and enjoined it and in 1901 disassociated and sold it; in 1960 Châteaux Malescot Saint‑Exupéry, Margaux, and Durfort‑Vivens purchased and divided it. A decade later, Bernard Chateau acquired it and renamed it Château Larruau. Today it is classified simply as Margaux, though the underlying quality endures, one hopes efforts to restore its classification are underway. The wine presents a brilliant and intense purple robe, darkening toward a black center. The nose is strikingly expressive, opening with red rose petal and broadening to aromatic cherry and raspberry purée, touched by a hint of cassis. Rich, sweet oak emerges and resolves with hints of freshly milled Szechuan peppercorn. The assertive palate is generous and finely fresh, carrying spicy black fruit with seductive notes of exotic sweet spice and dried herbs. The tannins are fine and supple, lending gentle contour without weight. A long, fruit‑filled finish reinforces the wine’s freshness, subtlety, and superlative balance. While it may not be destined for 20 to 30 years of cellaring, it will be exceptional over the next 10 to 15 years, and it represents an extraordinary value during that time.

2025 Château Lynch-Bages, Pauillac – Grand Cru Classé – Cinquième Cru     96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 66% Merlot 28% Cabernet Franc 3%

Château Lynch‑Bages sits on the same deep gravel ridge that supports many of Bordeaux’s greatest estates. With an average vine age of about 30 years, the vineyard is well anchored, its deep‑rooted plants capable of withstanding even the driest vintages. Among the oldest parcels, those with more than 75 years, the near‑drought conditions and unrelenting sun of the vintage served only to further concentrate fruit already wizened with age. Harsh though the season was, it proved ideal for producing the kind of fruit that defines Lynch‑Bages. The wine presents an intensely deep purple robe, saturating the glass from edge to center. The nose is perfumed and expressive, layering intense black fruit with a spectrum of aromatic spices and rich, 75% new, long‑toast oak. The ample palate follows with generous blackberry and cassis, lifted by aromatic fresh herbs and carried on a texture of soft richness and supple tannins. The wine’s sturdy, intricate structure remains gentle and pliant, always present yet never heavy, giving shape without weight. An endless, refreshing, and delightful finish extends the fruit and spice, offering bold intensity, harmonious balance, and a charming promise of what the wine will deliver in the years ahead.

2025 Château Mangot, Saint-Émilion – Grand Cru Classé     96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 5% Merlot 80% Cabernet Franc 15%

Château Mangot cultivates 37 hectares of Grand Cru Classé vineyards near the commune of Saint‑Étienne‑de‑Lisse. Here, the estate seeks to reveal the full diversity of its four distinct terroirs – the plateau, the terraces, the slopes, and the foot of the slopes – each contributing its unique nuance to a complex and thoughtful assemblage. Harvesting is carried out not only by parcel, but also by terroir, altitude, exposure, and vine age, allowing the team to isolate and elevate as many expressive facets of as possible. The 2025 vintage captures this complexity with striking clarity. The wine opens with a brilliant, intense purple robe edged with violet reflections. The nose is deep and opulent, driven by black fruit and cassis, enriched by a woodsy, high‑toast oak, and the sanguine whispers of rich, Charolais beef. The palate opens with nearly dried herbs and intense black fruit, accented by graphite etchings. The flavors are aromatic, bold, and voluminous, yet carried with elegance and harmony, supported by refreshing acidity and a ferrous minerality that anchors the wine. The finish is long, textured, and beautifully integrated, the tannins offering both structure and finesse. Cellar this wine for at least a decade to glimpse its full potential, or decant and savor it now for its youthful power and promise.

 2025 Château Montrose, Saint-Estèphe – Grand Cru Classé – Deuxième Cru     96/100Cabernet Sauvignon 77% Merlot 19% Cabernet Franc 4%

Château Montrose notes that 2025 brings together all the attributes of a great vintage, but without excess. The key to crafting this exceptional wine lay in arranging a multitude of dynamic elements into a single, harmonious whole — and the result is a beautifully composed Montrose. The wine reveals an intense purple core wrapped in a brilliant violet robe. The nose rises first with violets and roses, then deepens into intensely perfumed red and black cherry, accented by fresh, aromatic anise. The oak is discreet and impeccably groomed, contributing a subtle layer of background complexity. On the palate, the attack is powerful and fruit‑filled, flowing into a dynamic, long, and sultry mid‑palate. The tannins are soft yet omnipresent, imposing yet already supple, giving the wine both breadth and a quiet, commanding authority. Despite its power and firm structure, the fruit remains perfectly balanced, and a delightful harmony spreads effortlessly across the palate.

2025 Château Palmer, Alter Ego, Margaux     96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 54% Merlot 40% Petit Verdot 6%

Château Palmer writes that “after all the stress the Margaux sky inflicted upon the vine and its guardians, 2025 returned to reason through the grace of the final rains. And that reason is sumptuous, inscribing the vintage at once in the pantheon of the greatest wines of Château Palmer.” Alter Ego reflects this sentiment with its own distinct clarity. Though brilliant and expressive, it is also an intense, somber wine, painted in the deepest purple with a pitch‑black core. The nose is striking and immediate: blond tobacco smoke, crushed red and black cherry, a Cabernet‑edged herbal lift, and sweet, polished oak. It is both aromatic and grounded, a perfume of ripeness and quiet depth. On the palate, the wine is lively, juicy, and fruit‑driven, yet never simple. The fresh fruit is carefully organized by textured tannins and framed by rich, well‑integrated oak. Despite its youthful energy, the wine retains a sense of poise and restraint. The finish is exquisite and refreshing, allowing the minerality and salinity of Palmer’s sandy, fine‑gravel terroir to shine through with precision and grace. Alter Ego 2025 is a wine of brightness and depth, a cuvée that mirrors the estate’s philosophy while speaking in its own confident voice.

2025 Château Pédesclaux, Pauillac – Grand Cru Classé – Cinquième Cru     96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 69% Merlot 21% Cabernet Franc 9% Petit Verdot 1%

Château Pédesclaux rises from the Médoc’s deep gravel ridge, a terroir that rewards attentive stewardship. Since 2009, the Lorenzetti family has guided the estate with the same conviction: great wines begin with respect for the land. Their organic and, in some parcels, biodynamic practices reflect this commitment. By tending each plot according to its specific needs, Pédesclaux cultivates purity of fruit and clarity of varietal expression. Their 2025 Grand Vin embodies this philosophy – a wine shaped by outstanding terroir and elevated by precise, thoughtful vineyard work. The wine is brilliant, its intense violet robe deepening to a dark purple core. The nose opens with violets, bright cranberry, and blood orange before evolving toward red cherry, blackberry, and a subtle touch of tobacco. Baking spice and sweet, well‑toasted oak frame and focus the aromatics. On the palate, the wine is clean and fresh, with a fine floral‑fruit intensity. The oak, 50% new, is pure and measured, lending a supportive structure to the full‑bodied profile. Elegant tannins assert themselves with a silky texture, enhancing the wine’s mineral freshness and balanced poise. Château Pédesclaux offers a refined, harmonious wine – already approachable yet destined to gain polish and depth well beyond 2040.

2025 Château Phélan Ségur, Saint-Estèphe     96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 65% Merlot 30% Cabernet Franc 3% Petit Verdot 2%

Phélan‑Ségur’s preliminary assessment proved remarkably prescient: the aromatic depth and firm structure of their Petit Verdot, together with the freshness and precision of the Cabernet Franc, shine clearly in this beautiful 2025. The robe is a brilliant, intense violet with a dark purple core. The nose opens on concentrated black fruit, remaining measured and composed, with an aromatic overlay of baking spice and green peppercorn, all gently infused with well‑matured, sweet oak. On the palate, the attack is bold and fruit‑forward. A vibrant freshness underscores the wine’s precision and complex structure, its lively mineral thread guiding the profile toward a well‑balanced, elongated finish that stays generously fruit‑rich. Already harmonious, this is a wine one may happily enjoy now, while its structure promises graceful evolution.

2025 Château Piche-Leibre, Margaux     96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 100%

A young domain whose first vintage was released in 1990, this small 1.3‑hectare estate in Macau has steadily built a reputation for excellence within the Margaux appellation. With roughly 7,800 vines and a philosophy rooted in sustainability, the team remains firmly focused on cultivating the healthiest vines to produce the finest fruit. In 2025, that commitment has resulted in a wine of truly exceptional quality. The robe is brilliant and intensely purple, shading to near‑black at the center. The structure is firm yet suave, the tannins moderate in intensity but delicately textured and elegantly supple. Balance is already impressive, and the wine carries itself through a long, confident finish. A superb 2025 from a small but increasingly important voice in Margaux.

2025 Château Pichon Baron, Pauillac – Grand Cru Classé – Deuxième Cru     96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 84% Merlot 16%

Pichon Baron observed during fermentation that the excellence, precision, concentration, and elegance of their 2025 wine were the direct result of Precision Viticulture. This approach uses technology and site‑specific vineyard data to guide decisions, allowing the estate to respond to the natural variability within each parcel. By targeting the precise needs of every section of the vineyard, Precision Viticulture optimizes both vineyard management and fruit quality. Pichon Baron 2025 opens with an intense ruby‑purple color, its vivid violet reflections immediately catching the eye. The nose unfolds in layers of blackberry and ripe red fruit, intertwined with toasted spice and subtle dried sage nuances. On the palate, the wine is tight and focused, with black fruit partially veiled by sweet spice. The tannins are firm yet refined, carrying a Darjeeling‑like suavity that lends both structure and grace. Aromatic licorice and flashes of minerality brighten the taste buds, addin lift and definition to the wine’s darker core. This is a powerful, finely constructed Pichon Baron, one that clearly promises a long and distinguished life in the cellar.

2025 Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande, Pauillac – Grand Cru Classé – Deuxième Cru 96/100 Cabernet Sauvignon 81% Merlot 15% Cabernet Franc 4%

The vintage demanded careful handling, yet vinification quickly confirmed its promise for Pichon Comtesse. As alcoholic fermentation progressed, a natural equilibrium emerged, requiring almost no intervention. The final revelation came with the Cabernet Franc, whose floral energy – its distinctive rose and iris notes – completed Comtesse’s signature style. Their 2025 unfurls a sumptuous deep‑purple robe, its pitch‑black core illuminated by shimmering violet reflections. The wine announces itself with a lovely rose‑petal intensity and powdered notes, where ripe, almost jam‑like blackberry, cassis, and bramble mingle with an aromatic overlay of dried thyme, baking spice, and a pronounced clove accent. A thread of rich, high‑toast oak runs through the bouquet, edged with a subtle graphite tension. On the palate, the wine delivers its full aromatic density with savory, very ripe fruit that expands across the mouth. The oak and clove reappear, shaping the structure without overshadowing the wine’s purity. The tannins are firm yet polished, giving the wine both power and poise. This is a commanding Pichon Comtesse, a wine of depth, character, and quiet force – one that absolutely deserves time to reveal the full measure of its grandeur.
